The Department of Political Science was established in 1979 with an undergraduate program in Political Science and upgraded to Post Graduate department in 2012. The department is a destination for aspiring students from Malabar region of Kerala who wish to pursue
undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Political Science. It accommodates students from far-away places of Calicut, Kannur, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts. The student community of the department is a representation of the different social and economic groups in Kerala, including religious minorities and other marginalised communities, a testimony to the role played by the institution in nation building and ensuring social justice.
Department of Political Science comprises of seven teachers including the Head of the department. Apart from teaching, members of the department also undertake research activities as well. The Department proved its potential as a premier training and research centre by
attracting grants from various national and state funding agencies like UGC, ICSSR, Higher Education Council, Directorate of Collegiate Education and Institute of Parliamentary Affairs.
The department has research supervisors and excellent research track records such as implementation of ICSSR major research, UGC minor research and student dissertation as part of the partial fulfilment of their courses. Recently, Dr. Gayatri O., the Head of the department
has submitted a Major Research Project funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research. Three teachers of the department have doctoral degree and one is currently pursuing Ph.D. Two teachers of the department (Dr. Gayathri and Dr. Abdul Nazar) are recognized as research supervisors in the University of Calicut.
The quality of the department is visible from the success of our graduates and post-graduates who are now pursuing higher studies in various central and state universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Central University of Hyderabad, Pondicherry Central University, Central
University of Punjab, Central University of Kerala, University of Kerala and Mahatma Gandhi University. Students of the Department have also made remarkable contribution in their curricular and co-curricular activities. Students of both Post Graduate and undergraduate programs brought laurels to the department by securing top positions in Calicut University BA and MA Political Science Examinations.
